Sydney Holiday Weather Overview

Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales and is the largest city in Australia when it comes to population and can be found on the south-east coast of Australia on the Tasman Sea. Sydney was in competition with Melbourne to be named the capital of Australia before Canberra was built.

It was originally established as a penal colony by Captain Arthur Philip and is built around one of the largest natural harbours in the world.

Things to do and see in Sydney

The two most famous attractions that can be found in Sydney are the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, however there is much more to do in Sydney than to just visit these two famous landmarks.

For those who enjoy beaches as well as nature then there is the Bondi to Coogee Beach Coastal Walk that is stunning and something nature lover should not miss. There is also the Opera House to the Botanic Gardens Walk, the Cremorne Point to Mosman Bay Walk, the Manly Scenic and the Royal Botanic Gardens.

If you would rather lie on the beach then there is not only Bondi Beach and Coogee Beach but also Shelly Beach that is perfect for snorkelling, Manly Beach and Palm Beach where you can work on your tan.

Best month to visit Sydney

Sydney is beautiful to visit any time of year, with the different seasons being ideal for different activities around the city. If you want to enjoy Sydney’s beaches instead of the walks, sights and sounds of the city, then you will want to visit Sydney between spring and autumn rather than in winter.

Sydney's Climate

Sydney is blessed with a temperate climate, so you can expect warm summers and cool winters. There is no rainy season, and rainfall is distributed fairly evenly across the year. It rains on approximately 1 in 3 days, but rainfall amounts are rarely troublesome.

Spring in Sydney

Spring in Sydney falls between September and November, and it's a very popular time of year to make the most of all the city has to offer. Temperatures in spring range from around 15-20°C in the daytime, with nights usually above 10°C. If you're visiting Sydney in the spring, take a lightweight jacket for the cooler evenings, and an umbrella.

Sydney's parks and gardens come alive in the spring time, and it's also a fantastic time to take a seaplane to enjoy panoramic views of the coastline. If you're interested in Sydney's aboriginal heritage, spring is a popular season for walking tours of historical sites.

Summer in Sydney

Sydney's summer falls from December to February, and the entire city seems to spend most of the time outdoors. Average daytime temperatures are pleasantly hot at 25°C, but on occasion the mercury can top 30°C, with 40°C not unheard of. Night times don't cool down all that much, and so can feel a little sticky.

If you're visiting Sydney in the summer, take sunscreen and sunglasses, and plenty of lightweight cotton clothing. It's the peak season to enjoy Sydney's beaches, and there are lots of sporting activities to watch or engage in. New Year's Eves sees the world famous fireworks over Sydney Harbour, and of course visitors can also enjoy the Australia Day festivities in January.

Autumn in Sydney

March to May are Sydney's autumn months, and this season brings lot of colour to the city - not only from the autumn leaves, but also from the Sydney Carnival and the Mardi Gras. Temperatures are still pleasantly warm, typically in the high teens or low 20s Celsius, but autumn is the wettest season in Sydney, so don't forget your waterproofs.

Autumn is a favourite time of year for visiting the many nearby national parks, and walkers and hikers enjoy this season as the humidity is lower.

Winter in Sydney

Sydney's winters, between June and August, are pretty mild, with average daytime temperatures of around 7°C. The Sydney Winter Festival provides plenty of cultural events at this time, and nature lovers will adore the winter whale watching opportunities.

What to pack and wear in Sydney?

Depending on the season you are visiting Sydney in you will need to pack different clothing. For the summer you shouldn’t need anything more than light clothing, especially if you plan to spend most of your time at the beach. For winter, due to the drop in temperature you will need something warmer though there is no need to take anything like snow gear with you. Waterproofs and umbrellas are also something that you don’t need to worry about due to the low likelihood of rain.
