Airlie Beach Holiday Weather Overview
Airlie Beach is a popular tourist destination in Queensland, Australia. The town is known for its lively nightlife and is very popular with backpackers. Just offshore, the Whitsunday Islands are a tropical paradise, perfect for snorkelling, diving or lazing on white sandy beaches. Airlie Beach is also a starting point for those visiting the Great Barrier Reef, and a number of reef tour companies are based in the town.
Airlie Beach’s Climate
Airlie Beach enjoys a tropical climate with year-round good weather and little seasonal variation in temperatures. The area receives relatively little rainfall, so humidity is not uncomfortably high - however, cyclones in the summer months can occasionally be disruptive.
Airlie Beach in Winter
Winter in Airlie Beach falls between June and August. Temperatures are warm, with average daily highs of around 25°C and overnight lows of 17°C. Warm sunshine makes the beach enjoyable right through the winter, and the sea remains warm enough for swimming too.

September to November is Airlie Beach’s spring season. The Whitsunday Reef Festival is a big draw for visitors at in October, and the area will be busy at this time. Temperatures warm up rapidly, and average daily highs will reach 29oc by the end of November. Expect a few spring showers and some wind, but overall this is an excellent time to visit Airlie Beach if you are looking for calm seas and clear weather.
Airlie Beach in Summer
Summers get very hot in Airlie Beach. Between December and February, you can expect average daily highs of around 32°C, with temperatures often reaching much higher than that. Overnight lows of 24°C can be uncomfortably warm, and a little sticky too.
Box jellyfish inhabit the waters just off the beach at this time of the year, so swimmers use the purpose built lagoon instead.
Cyclones are relatively common in the summer months, and approximately three each season will touch Airlie Beach, although most pass without major damage or incident.
If you’re visiting Airlie Beach in the summer, be aware that high winds and choppy seas can disrupt travel plans, sailing and diving. Take plenty of lightweight summer clothing.
Airlie Beach in Autumn
Autumn in Airlie Beach falls between March and May, and is one of the wettest times of the year. Temperatures are still hot in March and April, at around 28°C, but do fall significantly to around 24°C in May. As winter approaches, calmer weather comes with it, so late autumn can be a good time to visit if you are interested in sailing or diving.
