Alice Springs Holiday Weather Overview

Things to do in Alice Springs

There are plenty of attractions that will keep everyone entertained, whether reptiles, gardens, walks, kangaroos, history or nights out are what you are looking for.

For those who are interested in fine art and culture there is the Mbantua Fine Art Gallery and Cultural Museum to visit that contains some beautiful artwork but is somewhat lacking in historical artefacts.

For exploring the wilderness around Alice there are many parks and walks and if you don’t feel like walking there is always the Camels Australia. Camels Australia is a camel farm that lets you ride the camels across the outback, a more unusual way of exploring the Red Centre than by foot.

The National Pioneer Women’s Hall of Fame is something unique to the Alice and contains information about over 100 Australian women who were pioneers in their fields. For those who enjoy history this is something not to be missed alongside the Old Ghan Museum.

Other attractions in Alice Springs include the Kangaroo Sanctuary, the Reptile Centre, the Royal Flying Doctor Service Tourist Facility and the Aboriginal Australia Culture Centre.

Best time to visit Alice Springs

April is often seen as the ideal time to visit Alice Springs as the temperature has cooled from the Australian summer highs and the nights have not gotten to freezing temperatures. The unpredictable rainfall that occurs during December and February has passed and given way to the greener growth in the valleys of the Red Centre.

If you really love the heat of the desert that visiting between October and March is your best bet to catch the sun and heat at its height.

The climate can become humid and when it does then there is always the risk of thunderstorms occurring. There are also monsoon rains to watch out for, but with these storms and rains, the temperature can drop to between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius.

Winter in Alice Springs

In the winter, the temperatures are not all that dissimilar to those you would expect to find in the UK, with night temperatures falling below 0 degrees Celsius and snow and frost can accompany the low temperatures.

When it rains in the winter the temperature tends to fall between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius, though in the dry, the temperatures can remain quite mild.

What to wear and pack for Alice Springs?

Light coloured clothing isn’t advisable as the Red Centre can be quite dusty with the dry and arid desert conditions, though light coloured clothing may be necessary if you suffer in hotter conditions in dark clothing.

In the summer during the day time, shorts, sundresses, t-shirts and skirts are advisable as the hot conditions can be too intense for wearing long sleeves and trousers.

As the temperature do drop in the evenings it is advisable to have some warmer clothing to change into if you are going to be out and about in the evenings. If you are visiting in the winter then it is advisable to take warm clothing with you to wear during the day and night.
