Sometimes the temperature does rise, but don’t expect the heat you would find on mainland Australia in the summer. However, the sun is very strong due to Hobart’s proximity to Antarctica, so sunscreen is essential. Bring something with long sleeves for the summer evenings, as it can still be rather cool at night.

Expect average daily highs of about 12°C, falling to 3 or 4°C overnight. Frosts are common, but snow rarely falls in the city itself. Mount Wellington often has a snow cap, however, and hiking through the mountains is a popular winter pastime but take a guide.
If you’re visiting Hobart in the winter, bring an umbrella. On consistently rainy days, you have every excuse to explore the city’s many museums and galleries, and other indoor attractions.
