Fortaleza Holiday Weather Overview
Fortaleza, in northeastern Brazil, is the country’s fifth largest city. It attracts a lot of tourists from within Brazil, and increasingly, from elsewhere in the world too. As well as some of the country’s largest shopping malls, Fortaleza also has a number of interesting beaches, including the bohemian Iracema Beach, backed by rows of restaurants and nightclubs.
As well as the lively nightlife and party atmosphere, Fortaleza is a good base for exploring this relatively unspoilt part of Brazil, with many traditional fishing villages nearby.
Fortaleza’s Climate
Fortaleza has a tropical climate, with little seasonal variation in temperature from season to season. There is a distinct dry season, however, and outside the dry season there is quite a lot of rain.
Fortaleza’s Dry Season
The dry season is between August and December. In August and December it will rain on around five days per month - however, in the intervening months the weather is very dry, with only one or two showers a month.
Temperatures are remarkably consistent in Fortaleza, and the average daily high of around 30°C is a constant throughout this period. Overnight, the temperature does not drop much - only to approximately 24°C - so it can be difficult to sleep at times.
This is the busiest tourist season in Fortaleza, and therefore the most expensive too. Because the domestic tourism market is so busy, you may find that you need to book your hotel well in advance.
If you’re visiting Fortaleza during the dry season, take a hat and sunscreen. There is a strong beach culture in the city, and it’s easy to forget how strong the sun is and how long you have been in it.
Fortaleza’s Wet Season
Between January and July, you can expect to get wet - very wet - in Fortaleza. March, April and May are the wettest months, with a whopping 14 inches of rain each. During that particular period, it rains on about 22 days each month, so you’re unlikely to stay dry.
In the rest of the wet season, the rain is more moderate, but still prevalent. Temperatures remain constant, at around 30°C in the daytime and 24°C at night, but with the high humidity it can feel very uncomfortable. January tends to be the hottest month of the year, but there’s not a great deal of difference from month to month - only a degree or so.
Fortaleza’s carnival is not as well known as that of other cities, but is growing each year; if you intend to visit during the carnival period, book your accommodation early and take an umbrella, plus waterproof shoes.
In fact, an umbrella is an obvious packing choice if you’re visiting Fortaleza at any time during the wet season. Don’t bother with waterproof clothing, as it’s far too hot and sticky for that. Don’t forget sunscreen however, inbetween the downpours the sun is still very strong indeed.
