Whistler Holiday Weather Overview
Whistler is Canada’s premier ski resort, and one of the busiest in North America. However, there’s more to this beautiful city than just ski slopes - Whistler is also famed for its après-ski life, its restaurants, family attractions and welcoming atmosphere.
Whistler offers different delights during each season of the year, so you don’t have to be a winter enthusiast to enjoy this city. The world’s longest continuous lift system operates throughout the year, offering unforgettable vistas and visitors can enjoy all manner of outdoor activities, from mountain biking to hiking, canoeing and swimming. There’s a strong cultural element to Whistler too, and a big emphasis on its First Nations heritage.
Whistler’s Climate
Whistler’s climate offers the best of all worlds; warm, dry summers, with cold, snowy winters. Spring and autumn, the shoulder seasons, are the quietest times of year, with changeable and unpredictable weather.
Whistler in Winter
Between December and February, Whistler is packed with winter sports enthusiasts and with visitors who come to experience the charm of Whistler’s famous village during the magical Christmas period.
Expect average day time highs of only just around freezing in December and January, rising to 2°C in February. Nights can be very cold, averaging out at -6°C. Snowfall is guaranteed - nearly 50 inches of it in each of December and January, plus another 25 inches in February. Through the heart of winter, it snows roughly every other day in Whistler.
Full winter gear will be needed for winter sports, of course, but even if you’re just in Whistler for the fun, you’ll want boots, snow jackets, hats and gloves. The windchill can make it feel as cold as -30°C, so pack wisely.
Whistler in Summer
Between June and August, Whistler experiences its summer weather. Expect average daily highs of around 24°C, although temperatures in the high 30s Celsius have been recorded. Nights, however, are cool, barely reaching 8-9°C, so you’ll need a sweater or a jacket even in midsummer.
You may catch a few showers in Whistler in the summer, but this just contributes to the gorgeous greenery of the summer mountains. Pack layered clothing to take account of the changing temperatures, and don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses too.
Whistler in Spring and Autumn
Spring comes late to Whistler following its freezing winter. In March, temperatures rise to around 7°C during the day, but are still below freezing and night, and you can expect another 18 inches or so of snow. April brings a further 6 inches of snow, but temperatures finally make it to just about freezing point over night. By May, you should really begin to see signs of spring, with no further snowfall and daily highs of 16°C.
Just as spring comes late, so autumn comes early. By September, daily highs have already fallen to 16°C with overnight lows of a chilly 5°C. In October, the first snows arrive, and by November, you can expect 25 inches of snow, with subzero overnight temperatures.
