Nicosia Holiday Weather Overview
Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, is in essence a divided city, with Northern Nicosia functioning as the capital of the self-proclaimed Northern Cyprus. Nicosia is the political and financial centre of Cyprus, and it offers some of the best shopping on the island.
Having said that, Nicosia lacks some of the archaeological charm of other Cyprus locations, and of course it has no beaches. It does have many hidden gems which are well worth seeking out, however, including the Cyprus Museum and the Byzantine Museum.
The Weather in Nicosia
Nicosia, like most of the rest of Cyprus, has a hot and semi-arid climate, with long, hot, dry summers. Most of the rainfall occurs in the winter months, but even then it rains on only around 1 in 7 or 8 days.
Sizzling Summers
In the summer, temperatures in Nicosia can easily reach the mid-30s Celsius, which many visitors will find uncomfortably hot. In July and August, you can go for weeks at a time without seeing a drop of rain, so pack plenty of sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat against the heat.
If you visit Nicosia in the summer, note that many of the museums and other sights close early, so the best time to visit is early morning. In practice, you'll find that early morning is the most comfortable time of day to do anything, since the city slows to a standstill under the midday sun.
Cooler Spring and Autumn
If you're not a heat lizard, you'll probably prefer to visit Nicosia in either the spring or the autumn. Temperatures are pleasantly warm between March and April, at around 18-21oc while at the other end of the spring-autumn axis temperatures in October and November can be as warm as 25-28oc - note that September still counts as summer in Nicosia, with heat to match.
With rain roughly 1 in 5 days throughout spring and autumn, you're unlikely to need too much in the way of waterproof clothing, but there's plenty to see and do in these seasons, including an international documentary film festival in March and the Cyprus International Film Festival in November.
Mild Winters
December, January and February are as cool as it gets in Nicosia, but even at night temperatures rarely dip below 10°C. If you're visiting in the winter, take a light jacket for the cooler evenings, and an umbrella for the occasional rainy day.
The city is relatively quiet during the winter months, so it's a good time to explore the delights of the Old City, or to cross a checkpoint along the Green Line and enter Northern Cyprus, to get a feel for the difficulties of the Cyprus' political problems.
