The town of Los Gigantes is named after, and lies at the foot of, the imposing cliffs of the same name which are best experienced up close from a boat.

Los Gigantes is a resort town in the Santiago del Teide municipality on the west coast of the Canary Island Tenerife. Its main features are the giant rock formations, Acantilados de Los Gigantes, that rise from the sea to a height of 500-800 metres after which the town has been named. Los Gigantes means "The Giants".

The town has a marina surrounded by concrete walls to dampen the effect of the rough seas around the area. A small black sand beach lies between the rocks and the marina. The marina has a boulevard with many restaurants. Close to the harbour is a lido.

Tenerife is the largest of seven islands that together form the Canary Island archipelago. Located some 80 miles off of the North-West coast of the African continent, these seven sun drenched islands are a favoured holiday destination to many millions of International tourists anually. From the dry volcanic scenery of the Teide National Park in the South to the lush tropical vegetation of the North the island with its year round sunny climate the island lives up to its reputation having been dubbed "The Island of Eternal Spring".

The cliffs at Los Gigantes, Acantilados de Los Gigantes in Spanish, are one of the island's major tourist attractions. There are three viewpoints in the village, the main one on main road to towards Tamaimo, another above the sports club and a third on a coastal path around the Hotel Barcelo. The village has many small shops and restaurants servicing the tourists that visit the area, especially on the one way road loop around church and plaza, and also near to the marina and beach.

Los Gigantes is a stunning location and is blessed with spectacular views and breathtaking scenery. The weather in Los Gigantes is the best in all of the Canary Islands.

The parish church of San Marcos has an extensive collection of historical sacred objects like the famous silver filigree cross - the largest of its kind in the world. According to old legends, the aboriginal Guanches came here to worship a small Gothic-Flemish statue which had mysteriously appeared in a cave at the beach of San Marcos long before the introduction of Christianity.

During the months of June to August you get an amazing 12 hours of sunshine, so one can make the most of these long days to enjoy the wonderful water sports of sailing, diving, water and jet skiing. The weather makes it enjoyable to indulge in dolphin and whale spotting.

Climate in Los Gigantes

The Los Gigantes holiday weather is warm all year round, making this resort town a good choice for a holiday. The weather is temperate with the summers being warm and dry. The months that have the best weather are June, July and August.

The hottest months are July, August and September, with temperatures reaching 26°C- 27°C, and often it can be hotter. However, as there is hardly any humidity, the weather remains pleasant. The Los Gigantes Mountains serve a great purpose as they protect the town from the trade winds, ensuring that the days are sunny and warm. The winds are light and calm throughout the year.

Summer: During the summer months of June, July, August and September the temperatures average from about 21°C – 23°C. At night the temperatures do not dip to a great extent and one can enjoy cool nights where the temperatures average between 13°C -16°C.

Autumn: During the autumn months of October and November the weather is still mild and temperatures range between highs of 18°C – 21°C and lows of 13°C – 15°C. Rain may occur for about 3 – 5 days a month.

Winter: The winter months of December, January and February are mild with temperatures reaching lows of 14°C. The average temperature during the winter months is between 14 °C-16°C. There may be little rain during the months of December and January but this does not mar the pleasant climate in any way.

Spring: The spring season in the months of March, April and May sees highs of 17°C -18°C and lows of about 10°C – 11°C, so there is not much variation in the temperature during a 24 hour period. There are about 10 – 11 hours of sunshine every day.

What to pack and wear in Los Gigantes?

Overall, casual and comfortable are the fashion statements around here.  In a shop or restaurant, shoes and shirts are usually appreciated, but nowhere are jacket and tie required. At the beach, swimsuit is the obvious choice. Sunblock, sunglasses, insect repellant and comfortable shoes are also essential.
