Lourdes Holiday Weather Overview
Lourdes is small town in the foothills of the Pyrenees - and every year, it becomes the temporary home to more than 7 million pilgrims, who come to see the grotto where the Virgin Mary was said to have appeared to a 14 year old girl in 1858.
This remarkable town has a population of only 15,000 but an entire industry has grown up around welcoming and looking after the pilgrim visitors. Lourdes is a year-round destination, although the busiest season for visitors is between April and October.
Lourdes' Climate
Lourdes' climate is heavily influenced by the surrounding mountains which tower above the town. With warm summers but cool winters, Lourdes receives year round rainfall, but the weather is never severe enough to cause disruption to visitors.
Lourdes in the Spring
Lourdes can be a little chilly in early spring. Daily highs in March average out at around 9°C, with nights of around 4°C, so you would definitely need long sleeves and a jacket for a March visit. As the season wears on, however, the weather begins to warm up and by late May average daily highs of 20°C are common.
Spring showers are frequent in Lourdes, so take an umbrella or a lightweight jacket.
Lourdes in the Summer
June, July and August are among the busiest months in Lourdes, with the steady flow of pilgrims increasing more and more as the weather warms up. Throughout the summer, you can expect daily highs in the low to mid teens Celsius, and overnight lows in the low to mid teens. This very agreeable weather means that visitors can explore the rest of Lourdes' sights and history after they have visited the grotto and the Basilica.
Rain is still quite common, despite the warm weather, but with an average of 9 hours of sunshine a day, what rain does fall is likely to be in short showers.
Lourdes in the Autumn
Autumn is the wettest season in Lourdes, but September and early October are relatively mild months, with daily highs still in the 20s Celsius. Nights are chillier, however, and as November arrives the temperature starts to fall sharply. By the end of November, daytime highs will struggle to reach double figures, and nights will bring frost.
Bring an umbrella and a waterproof jacket if you're visiting Lourdes in the autumn, and prepare for some days to be very grey and overcast.
Lourdes in the Winter
Winter weather in Lourdes is quite unpredictable - it can be very cold, or rather mild, depending on the year. There's a fair amount of rainfall, but not as much as in the autumn. Average daily highs in the winter months will sit around 7-8°C but nights can easily drop below freezing.
The town itself usually receives some light snowfall, with heavier snow in the surrounding mountains. If you're visiting Lourdes in the winter, take some sweaters and a warm winter coat, and perhaps an umbrella too.
