Morzine Holiday Weather Overview
Morzine is the most northerly of the French alpine resorts, and also one of the lowest. It is an attractive town, set either side of a gorge, and it has a distinctly family-friendly air. Although the principal attraction is the skiing and winter sports, Morzine also has plenty to offer through the rest of the year too, and is particularly noted for cycling and mountain biking - Morzine and its “daughter village” Avoriaz have hosted the Tour de France several times.
Morzine’s Climate
Morzine has a typical alpine climate, with cool winters, warm but not hot summers, and abundant yearly rainfall. Since it is at a relatively low altitude, snow often does not arrive until mid to late December - early skiers normally prefer the higher set Avoriaz, which overlooks Morzine.
Morzine in the Winter
Morzine’s winters are cold but not harsh. Average daily highs between December and February are 4-5°C, with overnight lows at -1 or -2°C. Snow usually covers the ground from January through February, but quite often precipitation will fall as rain when it’s snowing in the higher mountains.
If you’re visiting Morzine in the winter, take full winter gear if you’re going to be skiing - if you’re just there to enjoy the town, you’ll want a winter coat, hat, gloves and boots, as well as something waterproof.
Morzine in the Spring
Morzine warms up slowly for spring. In March, average daily highs reach only 11°C and overnight lows are still a chilly 3°C. April sees highs of 15°C but by May most days will see 20°C or more. It’s not until May that overnight lows make it into double figures, however, so spring nights can still feel chilly.
If you’re visiting Morzine in the spring, pack a sweater and some long sleeved clothes, as well as some lighter wear if it’s late spring and the sunshine levels are rising. Expect some spring showers too, bringing the alpine flowers to life.
Morzine in the Summer
Morzine is busy in the summer with people enjoying hiking, cycling and river sports. It should be warm, but not too hot, with average daily highs of around 25-27°C, and overnight lows of 16°C.
Summer is one of the wettest times of the year, however, so you’ll need to take an umbrella or a lightweight waterproof jacket. Don’t let this put you off enjoying the many outdoor pursuits the area can offer - although if you really don’t want to play in the rain, you could always visit the huge indoor waterpark up the mountain in Avoriaz.
Morzine in the Autumn
As the summer heat fades, Morzine starts to take on a more wintry feel. From an average high of 22°C in September, temperatures tumble quickly to 10°C in November. By mid autumn, nights will start to feel cold, and by November overnight lows will hover only just above freezing.
Expect plenty of rain in the autumn months, but snowfall can be unpredictable in its arrival and may not truly start until the winter.
