Fira Holiday Weather Overview
Fira is the capital of the extraordinarily beautiful island of Santorini in the Aegean Sea. Whitewashed houses and churches cling to the cliffs which tower above the collapsed volcanic caldera, affording gorgeous views and spectacular sunsets.
Fira and Santorini are very popular tourist destinations, and the island can become extremely crowded during the high season. Visitors are drawn not only by the island's natural beauty, but also by its history. Santorini is the site of one the largest volcanic eruptions in history, the Minoan eruption, some 3600 years ago - an eruption which some claim may have destroyed the fabled city of Atlantis.
The Weather in Fira
The island of Santorini is one of the only places in Europe to have a desert climate. Technically, therefore, Fira only has 2 seasons - a hot, dry season from April to October and a cool, wet season from November to March.
In practice, however, most tourists choose their holiday dates in Fira because of prices and crowds (or the lack of them) rather than the weather.
Sun, Sand and Sea
If you're visiting Fira and Santorini for a traditional beach holiday, then you'll want to go between June and September, when the island is at its warmest. The sea is bath-like for swimming and you'll need to pack sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen, as daytime temperatures can hit 30°C.
Nights are cooler during this peak period, cooled by sea breezes, so it's not uncomfortably hot for sleeping. Rainfall is almost non existent during the summer months, so you'll only need lightweight summer clothing and beachwear.
Sightseeing and Wineries
If you're visiting Fira and Santorini to soak up the Minoan and Greek history, or to explore the island's wineries, you're better off visiting in October or November, or April or May. The weather is slightly cooler then, making it easier to be energetic.
November sees the start of more rain, however, so if you're visiting during that month you'll want to pack an umbrella.
Limited Facilities
During the "winter" months, between November and February, many tourist attractions on Santorini close down, and ferry services and flights are limited too. The skies can be very overcast at this time, and this is when the island receives most of its rain.
However, the lack of crowds makes for a more authentic visitor experience, so if it's not your first visit and you don't mind missing out on some of the sights, winter can be an excellent time to soak up the true atmosphere of this unique little island. Bring a sweater and some layered clothing - daily highs at this time reach around 15°C but winds mean a chillier feel.
