Hersonissos Holiday Weather Overview
Hersonissos is a major tourist resort on the northern coast of Crete. It's known for its lively nightlife and beautiful beaches, and the town has a variety of tourist attractions as well as a busy shopping centre.
Nearby, there are traditional Cretan villages to explore, and there are also some interesting archaeological remains from the Minoan culture. The year round good weather makes Hersonissos a popular year round destination, although its busiest season by far is summer.
Hersonissos' Climate
Hersonissos benefits from a Mediterranean climate, with long, hot summers and mild winters. There is very little rainfall in the summer, and the summer climate is stable. Winters can be more unpredictable, however, and often quite wet.
Hersonissos in the Summer
Expect busy beaches if you're visiting Hersonissos in the summer. Average daily temperatures of around 28-32°C are normal, and nights are balmy, with overnight lows of around 20°C. 12 hours of daily sunshine and a very warm sea contribute to the summer feel-good factor, and this is certainly the most crowded season in Hersonissos.
Take sunglasses, sunscreen and summer clothing. A hat is also recommended, as the midday sun can be very strong. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. It's not the ideal season for exploring Crete's history, as it's simply too warm, but it is perfect beach weather.
Hersonissos in the Autumn
September is an extension of summer in Hersonissos, with average daily highs still 20s Celsius, and you can still expect 10 hours of sunshine a day. With the summer crowds largely gone, September is a popular month for visiting Hersonissos.
As autumn progresses, the temperature begins to drop. Daily high temperatures in October are 22°C, falling to 18°C in November. By the end of autumn, nights become rather chilly, with overnight lows of less than 10°C. There's an increasing chance of rain from now onwards, so pack an umbrella.
Hersonissos in the Winter
Hersonissos is largely quiet in the winter months, although with 6 hours of sunshine a day, it is becoming increasingly popular as a winter getaway. Daily highs reach 15°C and overnight lows rarely range below 8-9°C, so it's very mild.
Winter is the wettest season in Hersonissos, and you will see some rainy days. However, when it's not raining, the weather is largely clear and bright, and this is the perfect season for exploring Crete if you want a more authentic experience of the island.
Hersonissos in Spring
Hersonissos warms up rapidly in spring after its mild winter. By March, daily highs are already in the mid teens Celsius, and by the end of May temperatures are in the mid 20s. Early spring nights can be a little chilly though, so take something with longer sleeves for spring evenings.
Spring showers are still around, but they are usually short and sharp. As the wildflowers start to bloom and the temperature warms, spring is a beautiful time to explore Hersonissos.
