Killarney Holiday Weather Overview

Killarney is Ireland's 2nd most visited tourist town, after Dublin. This historic town is part of the famous Ring of Kerry, and there is something to be enjoyed here in every season.

Visitors to Killarney are often drawn by the area's outstanding natural beauty, with native woodland, caves, mountains and lakes in abundance. But what should you pack for your visit to Killarney?

Killarney in the Spring

Killarney in the spring is a beautiful sight, as the surrounding countryside comes back to life after the winter. Daytime temperatures range between 9 and 15°C between March and May, with late spring being considerably warmer and drier than early spring. This is a popular time to visit Killarney as there are fewer crowds - take layered clothing to account for the unpredictable temperatures, and a waterproof jacket.

Killarney in the Summer

Summer is the peak tourist time in Killarney, and the weather can be very pleasant with warm days in the low-mid 20s Celsius, less rain than the rest of the year and a plethora of outdoor activities and events. Fish in the Lakes of Killarney, or enjoy some watersports. Visit the historic Muckcross Abbey, or the Victorian Muckcross House. Ross Castle is also a popular destination during the summer months.

Take summer clothing and sunscreen if you're visiting Killarney in the summer - but maybe an umbrella too, just in case.

Killarney in the Autumn

Autumn scenery in Killarney is gorgeous, as the surroundings hills and mountains turn to gold and red. It can be very damp in September, October and November, however, and chilly too, with daytime highs averaging around 10-12°C. October and November are Killarney's wettest months, and winds can lash the town too. Mist and fog roll in to shroud the town sometimes, giving it an air of mystery. Take a sweater and something waterproof if you're visiting Killarney in the autumn.

Killarney in the Winter

It doesn't get particularly cold in Killarney during the winter, but you can expect temperatures to drop to below freezing overnight in January. Daytime temperatures are kept to a respectable 6 or 7°C thanks to the Gulf Stream. It's a popular time for walkers and ramblers and the snow on the mountains can be magical to behold.

Best Time to Visit the Ring of Kerry

The Ring of Kerry is a scenic route of just over 100 miles which takes in some of Ireland's most spectacular coastal scenery. In the summer months, you can expect the route to be very busy, with crowds at some of the more popular viewpoints and attractions. You can also expect glorious views, though, on sunny days.

If you visit the Ring of Kerry in the autumn or winter, you'll experience rain, and potentially lots of it. High winds can also lash the coastline, but this makes for some gorgeously evocative views with high waves and stormy skies. It's much less crowded at this time, which is a plus. Spring along the Ring of Kerry is very unpredictable, weather wise, but definitely worth doing if you want to avoid the crowds.
