Tralee Holiday Weather Overview

Tralee, in south west Ireland, is the county town of Co Kerry. Famous internationally for its annual Rose of Tralee festival, the town also makes the ideal base for exploring the Dingle peninsula and further afield.

This is a mystical, magical landscape and a very green one too, thoroughly living up to its place on the Emerald Isle. Lots of archaeological sites are dotted around in and near Tralee, and there are plenty of other family attractions to keep everyone happy during a visit to this pretty town.

Tralee’s Climate

Tralee benefits from a mild, temperate climate, thanks to the Gulf Stream. It’s is a very wet town, with abundant rainfall all year round, which keeps the beautiful greenery in full flow. It can also be rather windy, especially in the winter.

Tralee in the Spring

Spring is a lovely time to visit Tralee, but don’t expect it to be particularly warm. Average daily highs in March are around 10°C, rising to 15°C in May. Spring nights are rather chilly, and won’t rise into double figures until late spring or early summer.

Take an umbrella with you, as protection against the inevitable spring showers. Layered clothing means you can adjust well to the changing temperatures, and spring is a wonderful time to hike in the surrounding countryside or to explore Tralee’s museums and shops.

Tralee in the Summer

Summer is the peak season for tourism in Tralee, and August, when the Rose of Tralee is held, is especially busy. Summers in Tralee are pleasant, but not hot. Average daily highs reach 19°C in July and August - occasionally, temperatures of around 25°C occur, but the locals consider this a heat wave.

Regardless of what the thermometer says, refreshing sea breezes make it feel cooler, and overnight lows are a cool 11°C throughout the summer months - you’ll need to take a shawl or cardigan for the summer nights.

If you fancy a beach day, head to nearby Banna Beach for beautiful golden sands, but the waters off Co Kerry are not renowned for their warmth.

Tralee in the Autumn

Spectacular autumn colours are gorgeous around Tralee in the autumn, but this is the season when the rain starts to close in. Temperatures hold up reasonably well in September, at around 16°C, but by November temperatures will be struggling to get into double figures during the day, and will feel distinctly cold at night.

If you’re visiting Tralee in the autumn, take a good waterproof jacket and prepare for some blustery days.

Tralee in the Winter

Winter is low season in Tralee, so this is the quietest time to visit. Winters are cool, but not all that cold - average daily highs of 7-8°C throughout the season are do-able, although nights can fall to around 2°C, giving some frosts.

Snow will fall in the surrounding mountains, but snow in Tralee itself is rare, and does not lie for long. Rain is a different matter, this is the wettest part of the year, and it can seem to rain for days on end at times. Take plenty of waterproofs, but don’t let the rain dampen your enjoyment of this lovely town.
