Westport Holiday Weather Overview
Westport is a picturesque Georgian town in County Mayo, Ireland, set on the shores of Clew Bay. With gorgeous scenery, an important arts festival and much fascinating history in the area, Westport is Mayo's most important tourist destination, and is a popular town to visit at any time of the year.
Westport's Climate
Westport's climate is heavily influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. The climate is mild, but wet, with cool winters and cool-warm summers. It can and does rain at any time of the year, and storms can brew up quickly from the sea.
Westport in Spring
Spring is one of the most beautiful times of year to visit Westport. Average daily highs in March are 10°C, rising to 15°C in May. Nights throughout spring can be chilly, however, with temperatures hovering between 3 and 5°C.
Spring rains bring the surrounding countryside to life, and this is an excellent season for hiking and enjoying the natural scenery of Co Mayo. Bring an umbrella and layered clothing, as well as something waterproof.
Westport in Summer
Summer is the busiest time of year in Westport. In July, visitors from across the world flock to the city to undertake the pilgrimage of climbing the mountain Croagh Patrick on Reek Sunday. Summer is also the ideal time to explore the area's blue flag beaches and the islands of Clew Bay. There are many outdoor events and festivals to get involved in.
Average daily highs in summer can be a little on the disappointing side, but people don't come to Westport expecting tropical weather. Expect average highs of around 21-22°C through June, July and August, although occasional heat waves will push the temperatures higher. Nights are still quite cool, however, at only around 12°C so you'll want something with long sleeves for the summer evenings. And don't forget that umbrella - it still rains in the summer.
Westport in Autumn
Autumn can be gorgeous in and around Westport as the countryside changes colour and the winds and storms start to pick up. The ten day art festival in early October is always a big draw, but you'll want to wrap up warm.
Average daily highs in September are around 17°C but this falls rapidly to 10°C in November, and the nights start to become chillier too. Overcast skies mean that there isn't necessarily much sunshine, but there's plenty to do and see.
Westport in Winter
Westport is not all that cold in winter, with average daily highs of 8-9°C and nights of around 3°C. There can be prolonged periods of heavy rain, however, and grey skies are a certainty. If you're visiting Westport in the winter, come prepared with plenty of wet weather gear and some sweaters.
