Napoli Holiday Weather Overview
Naples is Italy’s third largest city, and one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. Its historic centre is a listed UNESCO World Heritage Site and is packed with ancient ruins and buildings of significant cultural importance. The city of Naples has a somewhat edgy air of faded glamour, but many people are drawn to its colourful past and mafia associations.
Most people visiting Naples will use the city as a base from which to visit nearby Pompeii and Herculaneum, but Naples has many attractions, historic sites and museums which are in themselves well worth a visit.
The Climate of Naples
Naples enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Although nearby Mt Vesuvius is still an active volcano and could erupt at any time, the warning systems are good and therefore the volcano should not cause concern for travellers.
Naples in the Spring
Spring is a beautiful time of year in Naples. Average daily highs reach 15°C in March and climb to 22°C in May, although spring nights can feel chilly. There are some spring showers too, but by and large spring weather in Naples is bright, if a little breezy.
Spring is an excellent time of year for visiting Pompeii, as you won’t get to hot walking around its dusty streets.

Naples in Summer
Summer is a peak period in Naples, and in Pompeii too. It can be hot - average daily highs in June, July and August reach 29°C, with temperatures in the mid 30s Celsius common. Summer nights are pleasant at 17 or 18°C and there is next to no rain at this time of year - you would be unlucky to catch a shower.
Take an umbrella if you’re visiting Pompeii in the summer, not because of rain, but to use as a sun shade. You should also pack sunscreen and sunglasses, and lightweight summer clothing.
Naples in Autumn
Once the summer crowds have gone, autumn can be an interesting time of year to visit Naples. September is still very warm, with average daily highs of 26°C, but by November, temperatures will have fallen back to around 17°C, with overnight lows in single figures.
Autumn can be rainy, but this splendid city looks rather magnificent in the rain, and the streets of Pompeii look cleaner and sharper. If you’re visiting Naples in the autumn, be sure to pack an umbrella.
Naples in Winter
Naples has a mild winter, with average daily highs of 14°C during the day. Night time temperatures dip to around 4°C, however, which will feel cold. Winter is slightly drier than autumn, but it can be quite windy, especially in Pompeii. It’s worth wrapping up warm to tour the city during winter, however, as most tourists will be gone and you can enjoy a much more authentic Naples experience.
