Tokyo Holiday Weather Overview

Tokyo is the most densely packed metropolitan area in the world, and when it's busy, it's busy! The city is a breath-taking blend of the ultra-modern with the ancient, and of pop culture with classical culture.

Each season brings its own delights in Tokyo and the seasons are marked by different festival rites and an entirely different atmosphere among the local people, who are very aware of the seasons in a way that few Westerners are.

Tokyo's skyscrapers, loudspeakers, neon lights, and teeming crowds can be intimidating to first time visitors, but many people who experience a taste of Tokyo frequently return. Each of the city's dozens of districts has its own distinct atmosphere and attractions.

Tokyo's more ancient attractions include the Meiji shrine, the Asakusa temples, and the Imperial Palace, but video game lovers may prefer to spend hours playing the world's newest games at the Sony Building's PlayStation floor. One of Tokyo's most recommended attractions, however, is simply taking in the hundreds of unique sights and sounds in one of the world's safest big cities.

When is the best month to visit Tokyo?

Although daytime weather can be unbearable during Tokyo's hot and humid summers, the city comes alive during summer nights, when the average temperature decreases to a more comfortable 20°C between June and September. Both Tokyo's weather and scenery are said to be most pleasant during autumn, when the leaves begin changing colours in October, and spring, when cherry and plum blossoms bloom in March.

Spring in Tokyo

Japan is famous worldwide for its stunning spring blossoms, and Tokyo is no exception. In March and April, the city bursts with colour. Although the blossoms last only a few days, they are an iconic part of Japanese culture and you won't want to miss a special trip to one of the parks to view them.

During the spring months, temperatures in Tokyo range from around 10-14°C but nights can be chillier. It rains every few days in the spring, and March can still get an inch or so of snow in some years.

Summer Rains

In Tokyo, the summer is the warmest but also the wettest season of the year. June and July each have around 12-14 rainy days, and temperatures are warm in the mid-20s Celsius. Take an umbrella! The rain lessens off in August, but the temperatures skyrocket, regularly reaching 31°C - and feeling hotter in the urban environment.

If you're visiting Tokyo in the summer, take a sunhat or parasol, sunglasses and plenty of sunscreen, plus light cotton clothing. August and September can see some ferocious thunderstorms as typhoons lash the coast.

It's worth noting that Tokyo is less crowded in July and August, as many local people had out on their own holidays, so this can make it an appealing travel time for those who want to avoid the crowds.

Breathtaking Colours

Just as the spring heralds in the pink blossoms, so the autumn period heralds gorgeous colours in Tokyo's parks and green spaces. The weather in autumn is pleasantly mild and often quite bright, although there's still a fair bit of rain around in October, slowing down in November. Day time temperatures hover between 13 and 18°C but nights can be chilly so bring a warm jacket.

Clear and Cold

Winter in Tokyo generally brings clear, crisp skies and cool temperatures. Bring some warmer clothing, as temperatures can dip to freezing at night; during the day you can expect around 4-5°C. It doesn't snow very often in Tokyo, but if you're there over the winter you might catch some snow for a few days.

Be aware that much of the city shuts down for the New Year celebrations at the end of December and for the first few days of January. Even museums, restaurants and shops close, so this generally isn't a good time to be a visitor in Tokyo.

What to pack and wear in Tokyo?

The weather in Tokyo during Tokyo's humid and rainy summers means both umbrellas and raincoats are necessary, but so are warmer items to wear inside the city's much cooler air conditioned shopping centres and other indoor attractions. Light jackets should provide enough protection during Tokyo's mild winters, while cotton clothing is most comfortable to cope with Tokyo's weather in autumn and spring.

Best months to visit Tokyo?

May and June are the best month to go for holiday or travel to Tokyo. The weather averages gathered from Tokyo weather forecast and Tokyo weather history also forecast these months temperature to be around 23°c and average of 205.4667 hours of sunshine in a month.

Coldest months of Tokyo?

January and February are the coldest months with temperature at around 2°c.

Which months receive most rainfall in Tokyo?

October and September receive most rainfall with precipitation count of 220.74mm.
