Kamakura Holiday Weather Overview
The historic city of Kamakura is located on Japan's Honshu Island about 50kms south of the country's capital, Tokyo. In historic times Kamakura was known as Renpu. Kamakura has a full range of visitor draws which include beaches, surfing spots, ancient temples and statues, and convenient access to mountains and great scenery.
Kamakura's iconic landmark is a Shinto shrine, Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu, which is in the middle of the city. Among other cultural sites in Kamakura are the Amida Buddha statue, Sasuke Inari shrine and Zen temples such as Jochi-ji, Jomyo-ji and Jufuku-ji. The Ofuna Botanical Garden, the National Treasures Museum and Kamakura Literature Museum are also pleasant places to spend a few hours.
The southern edge of Kamakura abuts Sagami Bay, and there are several beaches on the bay, including Yuigahama the most popular, that are a relaxing destination in summer. There is a surf break in the bay which, while not always consistent, is still popular with wave aficionados. Wakamiya Oji is the city's main thoroughfare and links the bay and Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu.
When is the best month to visit Kamakura?
Although Kamakura weather during the summer has most of the rainfall, this is a good time to come here. In June, blooming hydrangeas are a colourful and fragrant sight to behold. Kamakura's rich past means it has lots of heritage festivals. The biggest event, Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu Reitaisai, takes place in mid-September and is a date to aim for when planning a visit.

There are really only two main seasons here: winter (November to April) and summer (May to October).

Winter in Kamakura
Winter temperature falls dramatically during the winter months. The average maximum of the season stands at 16°C while the low fluctuates between 3-6°C. The first three months of the year receives a little snow with the average of 5cm per months and the city becomes just chilly for a few days. However, the season remains enjoyable enough for the visitors as it witnesses a great level of sunshine all through the year.

The weather in Kamakura during summer is hot and humid with frequent rain, so lightweight clothing is adequate at this time of year. Long trousers and a casual jacket will be useful for evening wear, and some kind of protection, an umbrella or cagoule, against the rainstorms. Winter visitors should bring warmer clothes, stout shoes and an overcoat for night time use.
