Malacca Holiday Weather Overview
Malacca or Melaka is a historic port city on the west coast of peninsular Malaysia. A designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is packed with interesting sights and pieces of history. Melaka is very proud of its multicultural heritage and this lively city is a popular tourist destination throughout the year.
Malacca or Melaka’s Climate
Melaka has a tropical rainforest climate. Due to its position close to the equator, there are no seasonal variations in temperature - it’s always hot. Technically, there is a wet and a dry season, but the clue to the rainforest climate is in the word rain - it rains quite a lot all year round, even in the “dry” season. Yet it is still one of the driest cities in Malaysia, so tourists need not be put off by the rain.
The Driest Time to Visit
Melaka’s driest months are December to February. If you visit during this time, you can expect it to rain on approximately 7 days each month. It’s also ever so slightly cooler at this time of year, although only by a couple of degrees. Daily highs between December and February average out at 30°C with overnight lows of 21°C.
This dry (ish) interlude is a very popular time for tourists to visit Melaka, so the town can become busy. It’s a useful time to visit the nearby wildlife attractions at Ayer Keroh.
The Rainy Season
September, October and November are the wettest months in Melaka, with each month receiving nearly 10 inches of rain, and more rainy days than non-rainy days. It rarely rains all day every day, though - mostly the rain falls in torrential bursts in the evening, after hot and humid days.
Daily highs during September, October and November are 32°C on average, and nights are a sticky 22°C.
If you’re visiting Melaka during the rainy season, it’s the ideal time to take advantage of the city’s many museums, galleries and indoor heritage attractions. You’ll need to take an umbrella and waterproof shoes, but don’t bother with any waterproof clothing as you’ll be much too hot for that. Don’t forget to take sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent and loose cotton clothing.
Turning Up the Heat
Although Melaka is hot all year round, February, March and April are the hottest months. During this time, temperatures can soar into the mid 30s Celsius or even higher. It’s still relatively humid too, with April being a particularly wet month. Most tourists avoid this period, but if you do visit, take lots of changes of cool clothing and an umbrella.
Although Melaka does receive a lot of rainfall, it’s rarely disruptive to tourists and the city by and large copes well with the rain. When it falls, it can be a relief from the searing heat, so there’s no reason to avoid Melaka during the rainy season.
