Albufeira Holiday Weather Overview
Albufeira is known as the Gateway to the Algarve. This popular tourist destination sits in the middle of Portugal’s southern coast and boasts beautiful sandy beaches as well as an interesting Moorish history.
Albufeira’s Climate
Albufeira experiences a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. It receives very little rainfall; there are only around 50 rainy days throughout the year; and is an extremely sunny city.
Albufeira in the Spring
March, April and May are lovely months in Albufeira. As the city’s green areas come to life, there is plenty of sunshine to enjoy with just a few occasional showers. Expect daily highs of around 17°C in March, increasing to 21°C in May. Nights are cooler, with temperatures falling to 11°C in March, so visitors will want to bring shawls or something with long sleeves for the cooler evenings.
Spring weather in Albufeira is perfect for exploring the city’s historic roots or shopping in the old town. It’s good for lazing on the beach too, although the sea is a little cool for swimming in this season.
Albufeira in the Summer
The summer is the peak tourist time in Albufeira, so it can get very busy. Expect continuous sunshine - you can go for many weeks at a time during the summer without a drop of rain. It’s hot, with average daily highs of 28°C, although refreshing sea breezes take the edge off the heat so that it doesn’t feel too much.
Occasional heat waves push the temperatures much higher than this, however, and temperatures in the high 30s or low 40s are not unknown in Albufeira. If you’re exploring the towns and villages inland, remember that the lack of a sea breeze will make these destinations feel much hotter than Albufeira.
Albufeira in the Autumn
There is a little rain in the autumn in Albufeira, but mostly showers. It’s still pleasantly warm in September, with daily highs of 25°C, but by November the temperature during the day will have fallen to around 18°C, with nights starting to feel chillier too.
The hardiest of tourists will still find the sea swimmable right through October, but by November the beach crowds will be thinning out.
Albufeira in the Winter
It never gets really cold in Albufeira, and winter day time temperatures will still reach around 15°C. Nights are a cool 7-9°C however, so take a jacket if you’re visiting Albufeira in the winter. Take an umbrella too, as this is when most of the rain falls. It can be wet, windy and stormy, but these brief wintry periods are interspersed with plenty of clear days and bright sunshine.
